We are always looking for ways to look our best.  I am going to share with you simple secrets to dressing slim that we can all begin today.  These 20 thin tips can be used with the clothes you already have in your closet.

When you get dressed I want you to be aware of how you are dressing, how you are placing the fabrics on your body, and what the clothes can do for you.  Don’t just throw on a top and bottom without intention and then throw yourself into the world.  I know we have all done this, I’ve done this too.   It is a great disservice to yourself, your confidence and your self respect.  When you take a few extra moments to dress slowly, choose your clothes carefully and make a few simple adjustments to how you are wearing something then you will feel more confident, self assured and ready for your day.  You deserve these extra moments.  This is a definite way to incorporate a little feel of luxury into self care.

These are very simple tips to begin with what you already have by making small adjustments to how you wear something.  This could be in the pop of a collar, choosing a different color top, a different shoe, adding a necklace or scarf, wearing the correct undergarments, rolling up your cuffs, etc.  There are truly so many little secrets to using your fabrics to appear taller, thinner ,and even hiding a few extra pounds.  Let’s take a look at 20 thin tips listed here to get started.

 

  1. When you wear hose try to match your hose to your shoe, or if you don’t wear hose match your skin color– this will make the leg look elongated and taller.
  2. Bodysuit undergarments are a must for the elimination of lines and bulges – Buy the correct bra!!  When you have an ill fitting bra on it will show bulges and/or you will be adjusting it nonstop.
  3. Wear fabrics that drape the body – light wool, cotton, rayon – Stay away from fabrics that form to the skin and body – spandex, etc
  4. Wear fitted jackets and coats – anything large, boxy or oversized adds to your body size
  5. Darker colors are your friend and hide many flaws – monochromatic dressing.  This means using dark colors from top to bottom creating one long lean line.
  6. Pleats may not be the trend but can hide tummy bulges in slacks if bought and worn properly. This is tricky as pleats as a rule can add bulge.  So choose carefully.  I also stay away from front tie belts and anything that forms a bow.  If you have a tie belt do not tie in a bow like a child that sits right in middle of your waist, do a classy knot that hangs.
  7. Raise your collar ~ my favorite ~ yes it is a timeless trend – gives you a longer leaner look through the neck down.
  8. Layer items creating a column of different lengths – Use one color from top to bottom to create a long lean look then add a long necklace, maybe a scarf or jacket. Make sure you pop a collar if you have it and roll jacket cuffs.  All of this creates definite lines and the one color as a foundation creates length
  9. Art of the scarf ~ wear at different lengths to create a lean look and never have the scarf equal to your waist – this creates a line and accentuates your waist
  10. Use necklaces to your advantage – layer different lengths
  11. Heeled shoes add great height and immediately creates a slimmer look – this does not have to be a certain height as just elevating the leg works.
  12. Worried about extra pounds through neck? V-neck lines will help create a long, leaner length. Be sure to choose a classic V-neck, not plunging.
  13. Stay away from busy and/or large prints – Use small prints around the smallest part of body
  14. Accentuate small areas like your wrists – roll up the cuffs on a shirt or jacket –  your wrist land towards your waist line so accentuating them and adding columns like a rolled cuff is key
  15. Make sure your clothes fit! Do not wear clothes that are too small as they will accentuate every sin or clothes that are too big as they will add unwanted pounds.  Invest in a good tailor if you need.
  16. Shapewear is an absolute must!!! Do not fool yourself into thinking you can get away with it because you are already thin.  Shapewear smooths out every line and wrinkle and hides every sin.  No matter your weight, I promise you that a smooth form is much more attractive than fabrics showing every indentation.  There is not a fabric of clothing that will not betray you, so beware.
  17. Lets talk denim – I love a great pair of jeans. Light colored jeans will make you look bigger, dark wash is always the way to go for a thinner look and let’s be honest – skinny jeans (unless worn under a knee high boot) is not flattering and will hide nothing. Instead, I suggest opting  for a  bootcut, dark wash and wear a heel.  This will add instant length and hides flaws.  Always buy your correct size and opt for high waist unless you have no waist line, which we all do.  Denim will cut at your waist and cause a muffin top. This is tricky and no pair of jeans is created equal.
  18. Stay away from leggings/tights! Good gracious.  I could write an entire blog on this alone.  Do not be offended, this may be my own opinion but here it is.  Tights/leggings belong to little girls and dancers.  As a woman if you want to wear leggings for ease and comfort, I totally get it, then wear a proper top.  A proper top with leggings will be one that is long enough to cover your backside.  This can actually be a good look and create a long, lean look.  I also love it in the fall or winter with a long button down and boots with maybe a long sweater or sport coat.  The key is the length of the top.  Leggings, even black leggings will betray you should you wear them alone for the world to see.  It is not elegant, it is not becoming of a woman.  Use your style wisdom in this area
  19.  Let’s discuss shoes again – wear a point toe shoe over a round toe. Pointy shoes create an illusion of length while a rounded toe creates a round full illusion of the body
  20.  An A-line skirt is always a good choice as it hides thighs and accentuates the waist
